Part 2
Shampoo Alternatives at a Glance
An honest comparison: what each alternative does well, and where it falls short.
Pick by scalp type
No single alternative suits everyone. Start here, then read the chapter that matches you.
- Rye flour — all types, flake-prone, sensitive. pH 5.0–5.5. Saponins, proteins, B vitamins. Rinse thoroughly; contains gluten.
- Oat flour — dry, sensitive, eczema-prone. pH 5.5–6.0. Beta-glucan, avenanthramides. Can feel heavy on very fine hair.
- Rhassoul clay — oily scalp, oily flaking. pH 7–8, buffered. Silica, magnesium, ion exchange. Can be drying; always follow with a vinegar rinse.
- Shikakai — oily hair, scalp stimulation. pH ~4.5. Saponins, vitamin C. Drying with overuse.
- Egg yolk — damaged, brittle hair. pH ~6.5. Lecithin, proteins, biotin. Cool water only.
- Apple cider vinegar — rinse and pH reset only, never a standalone cleanser. Avoid on rosacea-prone skin.
- Baking soda — not recommended. pH 9+, it lifts the cuticle and damages hair over time.
Quick rule
If it fizzes, foams aggressively or sits above pH 7, it does not belong on your scalp. Stay with the pH-balanced, plant-based options in this guide.
