Rye Flour Basic Wash
The classic Eastern European hair wash: saponins cleanse gently, rye proteins smooth the hair shaft.
Vegan · pH 5.0–5.5 · Best for: All hair types, flake-prone and sensitive scalps
You need
- 2–3 tbsp whole rye flour (Type 1150 or 1370)
- 200–250 ml lukewarm water
- Optional: 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (pH optimizer)
- Optional: 2–3 drops essential oil (lavender, rosemary or tea tree)
How to
- Mix to a smooth, lump-free paste and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Detangle dry hair, then wet it with lukewarm water — hot water damages the proteins.
- Apply section by section to the scalp and massage gently for 2–3 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water for at least 2–3 minutes. This is the most important step.
- Optional finish: an apple cider vinegar rinse for shine and pH balance.
Good to know
- Contains gluten — skip it if you have a gluten allergy.
- Expect an adjustment phase of 4–6 weeks: weeks 1–2 can feel greasy or waxy, weeks 3–4 sebum production slows down, weeks 5–6 hair feels lighter and wash intervals stretch.
