Part 4
Oat Flour
Beta-glucan and avenanthramides — the gentlest of the flour washes.
The science
Colloidal oatmeal is one of the most thoroughly studied soothing ingredients in skin care and is recognized by the FDA as a skin protectant.
- Beta-glucan — a soluble fiber that forms a protective film, holds moisture in and reduces water loss. Clinically shown to reduce itch and irritation (Kurtz & Wallo, J Drugs Dermatol 2007).
- Avenanthramides — polyphenols found only in oats, with calming, antihistamine-like properties.
- Saponins — gentle cleansers that lift dirt and excess sebum without disturbing the lipid barrier.
- Proteins and lipids — improve elasticity and reduce breakage.
Best for
Dry and sensitive scalps that find rye too drying, reactive itchy scalps, and eczema-prone skin (use it plain, with no essential oils).
